UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHARLOTTE CHOOSES MARCIVE AUTHORITIES PROCESSING

San Antonio, Texas, June 22, 1998. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has awarded a contract to MARCIVE for the authorities processing of its bibliographic database of 650,000 titles.

Utilization of MARCIVE's authority control services will occur in phases. The first phase of implementation begins this month with the processing of the Library's current cataloging, via Overnight Authorities. The Library uses OCLC for its ongoing cataloging and will FTP files for overnight processing. The next day the Library receives an e-mail message indicating that the verified OCLC records are ready for pick-up and loading into the Library's VTLS system. As an existing Notification Service customer, the Library has elected to pick up all of its new MARC authorities records on a monthly basis, at the same time as it receives revisions to previously distributed authorities. This blends into a single file all of the authority work performed for both OCLC cataloging and the Library's MARCIVE Enhanced GPO Database Subscription.

Patti Easley, Principal Catalog Librarian of the J. Murrey Atkins Library, explains, "We have been looking forward to freeing some of our authority staff for various projects. Beginning MARCIVE's Overnight Authorities service is an exciting step for us, and one that we are confident will be successful. As more and more users access our catalog remotely, the need for quality authority control increases. MARCIVE is providing us with that service."

The second phase of the project will involve the entire backfile and will occur later this year in conjunction with a system upgrade.
