University System of Georgia Chooses MARCIVE GPO Processing for Nine Depository Libraries
San Antonio, Texas, October 15, 1999. The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia has selected MARCIVE to perform retrospective extraction of US government document cataloging for nine depository libraries. Improving access to government documents for Georgia citizens supports the GALILEO (GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online) and GIL (GALILEO Interconnected Libraries) technology initiatives.
First to implement the file in GIL, using Endeavor's Voyager software, was the University of Georgia in Athens, a regional depository (established to receive all US government documents). The library loaded the database in August 1999. This month the State University of West Georgia in Carrollton, a selective depository, received a customized file of records representing documents they had received over the years. Remaining libraries slated to profile and load the customized retrospective records: Augusta State University, Columbus State University, Dalton State College in Dalton, Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Georgia State University in Atlanta, and Gordon College in Barnesville.
MARCIVE is the sole source of the MARCIVE Enhanced GPO Database, a file of cataloging records for US government documents extending back to 1976. The file was enhanced through a multiyear project with librarians from Texas A & M University, Rice University, and Louisiana State University. Unlike traditional piece-by-piece retrospective conversions, a MARCIVE Retrospective Extraction allows the library to establish a profile based on its historical item selections and have the records extracted automatically. A number of customizing options make the process especially simple and useful.
MARCIVE has also been selected to perform Authorities Processing for these libraries and for an additional 31 libraries of the University System of Georgia.
Based in San Antonio, Texas, MARCIVE supplies libraries with GPO services, authorities and other database processing, retrospective conversion, and cataloging.
