Sell the Typewriter! You Don't Have to Type Copy and Volume on Labels
Cataloging customers who use MarciveWeb SELECT can now receive spine labels and smart barcode labels with copy and volume information already on the labels. What specifically has changed?
On November 15, we began offering a new way for you to indicate how you wanted your spine and barcode labels to come back to you. Those of you who are profiled to receive spine label sets saw a new column "Print Book Label?" appear on the Local Data (Item Level) screen; those profiled to receive smart barcode labels saw a new column "Print Barcode Label?". Both columns display for customers profiled for both. You can use this new level of specificity to save time and typing when you need labels with Location, Volume, and Copy information. For more information, see page 3.
Another great new feature is the ability to suppress receipt of a MARC record. MARC record customers now have a new option Send No MARC Record on the Order Review screen.

University System of Georgia Chooses MARCIVE for GPO and Authorities Processing
The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia has selected MARCIVE to perform retrospective extraction of US government document cataloging for nine depository libraries. First to implement the file in GIL (GALILEO Interconnected Libraries), using Endeavor's Voyager software, was the University of Georgia in Athens, a regional depository. Selective depositories are next: State University of West Georgia, Augusta State University, Columbus State University, Dalton State College, Georgia Southern University, Georgia Southwestern State University, Georgia State University and Gordon College.
MARCIVE has also been selected to perform authorities processing for these libraries and for an additional 31 libraries of the University System.
Several projects have already been completed. For more details, please contact Joan Chapa.

Archival Database Maintenance to be Released First Quarter
MarciveWeb SELECT customers who have created MARC records using a Cataloging Work Form or Special Order will soon be able to view, modify, reuse, and delete those records.
Testing is underway on this new feature, which should be released during the First Quarter 2000.
A message will appear in MarciveWeb SELECT when the feature is ready for use. An announcement will also appear on our electronic forum for cataloging customers, Marcive_CAT.

We have just signed an agreement with Syndetic Solutions of Portland, Oregon to provide us with MARC record enrichment data. There are a number of innovative and economical ways we plan to use these data to make your Online Public Access Catalog better. Look for an announcement soon as to how you can obtain:
Added entries for Fiction records, such as where the action takes place and the name of the main character.
Improved access to Biography records.

Reclassification Options Enhanced
Are you contemplating changing from Dewey Decimal Classification to Library of Congress Classification?
MARCIVE has been assisting libraries like yours with this complicated task for many years. Over the last few months we have been enhancing our reclassification software to handle specific projects. We can now say "Yes" to more complex projects than we could in the past.
Printing the correct number of labels when there are multiple holding codes and multiple copies within the same record.
Printing the new LC call number but sorting the labels by the old Dewey number. Actually, we have always done this, but the process has been streamlined.
Allowing you to choose whether volume and copy information appears on the main spine label or on what we refer to as the "bonus label", a small separate label printed just below the spine label.
Suppressing certain categories from reclassification.
Printing matching barcode labels.
If your library has made the decision to reclassify from DDC to LC, please contact Rose Marie McElfresh for a Reclassification Questionnaire. To quote a price we need to see your specifications and a sample of your data.
Keep in mind that we can also perform reclassification as part of a retrospective conversion project. Just let us know up front!

Libraries Recently Initiating Overnight Authorities
We help libraries keep their authority work up-to-date through ongoing authorities services. A library sends their cataloging records to us via FTP and the next day receives the resulting cleaned-up bib records and deduplicated authorities records. As with backfile processing, there are a number of options designed to make the service particularly useful.
The most useful of these options may be the addition of Notification Service, which alerts the library to changes and deletions of previously distributed authority records.

New Shipping List Number and Date Format Now in Use
by Jim Noël
With the start of the FY 2000 shipping list distribution, GPO has begun numbering the shipping lists with four-digit years and putting shipping list dates into the same form.
We have changed all of our current shipping list processing to match, even for the remaining 1999 shipping lists. While this likely will cause no problems for customers receiving MARC shipping list records, those receiving comma-delimited files did run into trouble with the change. Ive attempted to correct all of the files affected and adjust the record processing to continue two-digit years, but if you are encountering any trouble related to this change let me know and Ill be glad to take a look.

Keeping Those PURLs and URLs in Good Shape
by Jim Noël
I'm sometimes asked how or whether MARCIVE works to keep URLs and PURLs accurate.
Unfortunately, while I can and do try to watch for problems with their form, I do not have the resources to regularly research URLs that fail. I certainly welcome reports of URLs and PURLs that don't work, but the best thing to do by far is to also report the information to askLPS (
asklps@gpo.gov ) or to GPO's Cataloging Branch. As reported at the Federal Depository Council meeting in Kansas City last month, "Reports from the library community regarding broken and new links are encouraged. Such information may be reported to askLPS or to Theodore Defosse at tdefosse@gpo.gov , phone 202-512-1121, extension 31120." (From the Cataloging Branch Update handout.)If you report these problems to GPO directly, you assist in keeping the links working for a great many other people. Users of hotlinked databases, such as MarciveWeb DOCS benefit, of course, but so do the many users of GPO cataloging who load the records with PURLs into their catalogs.
If you prefer to report failed URLs to me, I'll be happy to forward them on to GPO.

New Titles List Available in Electronic Format
Customers of the MARCIVE Enhanced GPO Database Ongoing Subscription can receive a list of all of the titles included in each month's cataloging file. The New Titles List, as we refer to it, is now distributed in electronic form.
Available at the same time as the library's MARC file, the New Titles List summarizes the bib records for that month in plain text format. The easiest way to pick up the list is by using your web browser.
The cost of the service is $0.04 per title. Current customers can begin receiving this list by contacting Diane Jeffcoat at jeffcoat@marcive.com.

Change in Shipping List Number Format
If you are searching shipping list numbers in the Note or Anyword field of the Combined Search screen of MarciveWeb DOCS, you will need to type the shipping list number and the shipping list date in the new four-digit format.
Format examples:
Shipping list 2000-0019-P
Shipping list date 10/22/1999
We do not plan to reprocess older shipping list numbers or dates, on the assumption that older numbers are generally not an important access point in MarciveWeb DOCS.
Finding Full-text Documents
MarciveWeb DOCS includes records with URLs, which provide the "hot-links" to full-text documents on the Internet.
Want to find records with URLs? Go to the "Combined Search" screen. If you know the agency that may have documents on the Internet, enter it on the "Author" line. Then type "Internet" on the "Anyword" line. If you dont know the agency, you can instead type a subject on the "Subject" line. Then click on "Search." Youll retrieve a list of titles that have URLs or PURLs.

Welcome to New GPO Cataloging and SLS Customers
Since last March, several academic and public libraries have chosen to get MARCIVE Enhanced GPO Services. All of these depositories load new government document cataloging with an Ongoing Subscription and most choose to get some combination of MARC records, labels, or shelflist cards through Shipping List Service. Those institutions marked "Retro" have elected to increase the depth of their government document cataloging to show holdings as far back as 1976.

Any Library Can Provide OPAC Access Automatically to Thousands of Electronic Government Resources for $1300/Year
United States federal agencies put a lot of valuable technical and consumer information out on websites. Some of this same information is available in traditional formats of paper, microfiche, and CD-ROM and can be found in the nearest federal depository.
However many of you in nondepository libraries want to get access to the information simply by connecting to the correct website, rather than sending your patrons across town.
The problem has been the time and effort involved in developing lists of sites, creating appropriate cataloging records so that patrons can find the sites, and loading these records into your Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). Consultants as well as public and academic librarians have asked us if we could cumulate lists of US government websites and provide cataloging to them.
We now offer government document cataloging records which contain a URL (the address of the electronic document) as an annual $1300 subscription. There is a one-time $75 set-up fee. Every month you receive a file of between 100 and 225 MARC cataloging records for electronic government resources. The MARC records are customized to load easily into your local system.
What types of information can be provided this way? Here are a few examples:
Consumer Information
Air Travel Consumer Report

Census Data
Census of governments (1992)
